This VAG 2.0/2.5/4.2/5.2 Performance Ignition Coil is the earlier pencil-style ignition coil used across several generations of Volkswagen Group engines from around 2004 to 2026.
The most popular application for this VAG 2.0/2.5/4.2/5.2 Performance Ignition Coil is the 2.0 TFSI/TSI used in Golf GTI Mk5 and Mk6, Golf R Mk6, Audi S3, TT and TTS 8J, SEAT Leon Cupra 1P and Skoda Octavia vRS and many others.
But this same Ignition Coil doesn't stop there. Its application extends to the five-cylinder Audi RS3 8P & pre-facelift 8V (not later 8V/8Y), Audi TT RS 8J and RS Q3 8U. The facelift-era 2.5 TFSI evo (RS3 8V FL/8Y, TT RS 8S, RS Q3 F3) uses the top-hat coil — see MTP-1003.

Why do my original ignition coils fail?
Ignition coils operate in one of the most demanding environments found anywhere on a modern car.
They are exposed to heat, vibration and repeated electrical loading, often while mounted directly onto the engine. Every time a spark plug fires, the ignition coil must convert the car’s low battery voltage into the much higher voltage needed to create a spark inside the combustion chamber.
Over time, this repeated stress will inevitably cause the coil’s internal insulation, windings, electrical connections or outer casing to deteriorate.

Can Mantis coils help fix misfires?
They can help if the misfire is caused by weak or failing ignition coils. However, misfires can also be caused by spark plugs, injectors, wiring or other engine issues, so proper diagnosis is recommended.
When should I change my original coils?
There's no single answer to this, but we always recommend that by around 60k miles / 100k kms, your original coils will be deteriorating. You may already be noticing poor running, you may have a fault code - or often, over the years, you may not have noticed the gradual rougher running or lower power that results from weak ignition coils.
