The EA888 Gen3 & Gen4 2.0 TSI is VW Group's core performance four-cylinder — powering more than a decade of Golf R (Mk7/Mk7.5/Mk8), Golf GTI (Mk7/Mk7.5/Mk8), Audi S3 (8V/8Y), RS3 8V (2.5 TFSI 5-cyl uses a different coil — see MTP-1002 pencil), Cupra Leon Cupra R and Formentor VZ, Skoda Octavia vRS Mk3/Mk4, TTS Mk3 and more. All of them use the same coil-on-plug assembly. Under Stage 1+ boost the OE VAG top-hat coils are the first thing to give up. - Misfire codes P0301–P0304 flagged on OBDeleven, VCDS or a generic OBDII scanner
- Stumble on part throttle, especially mid-boost around 3,000–4,500 rpm
- Rough cold-start idle, particularly after a Stage 1 map

Installation notes
Direct plug & play — no coding, no VCDS or OBDeleven work required. Remove the engine cover (four Torx), disconnect the coil connectors (green tabs, lift then pull), 10mm bolt each, coils slide up and out. Because the EA888 stresses all four cylinders equally, always replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven spark and the ECU pulls timing to compensate, killing the performance benefit of the new coils. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install: 15–20 minutes.
Common questions
Will these fit my Golf R (Mk7 / Mk7.5 / Mk8), GTI, S3, RS3 8Y or Cupra without coding?
Yes. All EA888 Gen3 and Gen4 2.0 TSI engines share the same coil-on-plug assembly (VAG part 06L 905 110). MTP-1003 is a direct plug & play replacement — the ECU reads it identically to the OE coil. No coding, no VCDS or OBDeleven work required.
I'm running Stage 1 / Stage 2 — do I need to change coils?
Highly recommended. Tuned EA888s see cylinder pressures well above OE spec, which accelerates winding degradation — one of the most common causes of Stage 1 misfires. Fresh MTP-1003 coils give you the spark headroom to match the extra boost. Most tuners (APR, Revo, Unicorn, Cobb, Bar-Tek, IE) recommend fresh coils alongside plug changes when going Stage 1 or above.
What's the difference vs the OE VAG coil?
