The Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ Mk1 is a proper cult car — flat-4 boxer, rear-drive, no turbo, no gimmicks — and every serious owner has spent a winter chasing cold-start misfires and 4,000 rpm flat-spots. The same FA20 lives in the Scion FR-S; the FA20DIT turbo powers the Forester XT SJ; and the FB20 / FB25 naturally-aspirated boxers run in Forester, Outback, Legacy, XV/Crosstrek and Impreza GP. All of them share one Diamond Electric coil-on-plug — Family A, rectangular connector. Installation notes
Direct plug & play — no coding, no Subaru Select Monitor session required, identical fitment across all FA20 / FA20DIT / FB20 / FB25 boxer engines with the rectangular-connector coil (Family A). Access is easy on the flat-4 — coils sit vertically on top of each valve cover, two per side. Single 10mm bolt per coil, unclip the connector, lift out, drop the MTP-1015 in, torque to 7 Nm. Always replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven cylinder-to-cylinder combustion and the ECU pulls timing globally to protect the weakest cylinder, negating the performance benefit of the new units. Track and rally use — where the FA20 lives most of its life — makes fresh coils a scheduled service item, not a fix-when-broken part. Total install time: 20–30 minutes.
Common questions
Will this fit my GT86 / BRZ / Forester XT without coding?
Yes. Direct plug & play replacement — the Subaru / Toyota ECU reads MTP-1015 identically to the OE Diamond Electric coil (22433-AA650 family). No coding, no Subaru Select Monitor, no ECUTEK re-flash needed. Applies to all Family A rectangular-connector applications listed below.
Do I really need a full set of 4, or can I just replace one?
We strongly recommend all 4 as a set. The FA20 in particular is famously sensitive to cylinder-to-cylinder spark balance — one weak coil throws off the boxer's already-uneven firing order and the ECU compensates by pulling timing across the board, which erases the performance benefit of the new part. If you're pit-lane stuck on trackday, one MTP-1015 will get you home, but the set is the correct fix.
Does this fit my GR86 (ZN8) or newer BRZ (ZD8)?
No — GR86 ZN8 and BRZ ZD8 use the newer FA24 with a different Denso coil family (triangular connector, AA720 / AA730 / AA740 pattern), which is a separate physical part. MTP-1015 covers Family A only: GT86 ZN6, BRZ ZC6, Scion FR-S, plus the whole FB-series NA boxer range and the FA20DIT Forester XT. Family B (ZN8 / ZD8 / newer WRX VB) is on our next-order roadmap as a separate SKU.
