Toyota GR Yaris, GR Corolla & Lexus LBX Morizo RR — G16E-GTS 1.6T Performance Ignition Coils

The G16E-GTS is Toyota's rally-derived 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo — one of the smallest and most power-dense production engines on the road, purpose-built for the GR Yaris homologation programme and now also fitted to the GR Corolla and Lexus LBX Morizo RR. Denso is Toyota's sole-source OEM coil supplier for the platform — no NGK, Bosch or Delphi cross exists. MTP-1014 is the first quality aftermarket option: a direct plug & play replacement engineered in the UK, delivering 12% more spark energy from a neodymium-core primary — a straight swap with the heat-handling headroom a hard-driven or tuned G16E actually needs.

Signs your GR Yaris / GR Corolla / LBX Morizo RR needs new coils

  • Misfire codes P0301–P0303 on a generic OBDII scanner or Techstream
  • Rough idle from cold — especially noticeable on tuned GR Yaris / GR Corolla
  • Loss of overboost / top-end pull above 5,500 rpm on WOT pulls
  • Fuel trims drifting without an intake or injector fault
  • Intermittent CEL clearing after a drive cycle
  • Stumble or flat spot on WOT hard shifts in Sport / Track mode

Installation notes

Direct plug & play — no coding, no Techstream, no dealer trip required. Identical fitment on GR Yaris (GXPA16), GR Corolla (GZEA14H) and Lexus LBX Morizo RR. Access on the G16E-GTS is tight but straightforward: pop the engine cover, unclip the 3 coil connectors, 10mm bolt out, swap coils in, bolt back in — 10 Nm torque. Always replace as a set of 3 for even spark distribution; mixed-age coils cause the ECU to pull timing to compensate, which negates the performance benefit of the new units. Total install time: 20–25 minutes.

Common questions

Will this fit my GR Yaris / GR Corolla / LBX Morizo RR without coding?

Yes. Direct plug & play replacement — the ECU reads MTP-1014 identically to the OE Denso coil (90919-02277). No coding, no Techstream, no dealer visit required. Aftermarket ECU maps treat MTP-1014 exactly like the OE coil — no re-mapping required.

Do I really need all 3, or can I just replace one?

We strongly recommend replacing all 3 as a set. On a 3-cylinder there's nowhere for a weak coil to hide — a mismatched coil on cyl. 1, 2 or 3 causes uneven spark distribution, and the ECU compensates by pulling timing, which loses the performance benefit of the new coil. On the G16E-GTS this is more pronounced than on a 4- or 6-cylinder engine because there are fewer cylinders sharing the load. If you're in a bind and just need to clear a specific misfire, a single MTP-1014 will work as an interim fix.

Why is this the only aftermarket option — and will it hold up on a tuned G16E?

Denso is Toyota's sole-source OEM coil supplier for the G16E-GTS platform — NGK, Bosch, Delphi, Bremi and Hella don't publish a cross for it, which is why the aftermarket has been effectively empty until now. MTP-1014 is the first quality alternative. On the tuning side, this is where it earns its place: aftermarket maps push the G16E well past 300 hp and cylinder pressures climb hard with the extra boost. The 12% spark-energy uplift and neodymium primary core give you the headroom to hold ignition cleanly under sustained load — with the same physical fit, connector and wiring as the OEM Denso part.

This coil also fits

Full application list — Toyota G16E-GTS platform:

  • Toyota GR Yaris GXPA16 (2020+) — 272–300 hp
  • Toyota GR Corolla GZEA14H (2023+) — 300 hp Circuit / Morizo
  • Lexus LBX Morizo RR (2024+) — 300 hp

Note on quantity: G16E-GTS is a 3-cylinder — 3 coils per engine. This coil is engineered specifically for the G16E performance platform. The same physical Denso 90919-02277 stick-coil pattern is also fitted to Toyota / Lexus hybrid 2.5-litre M20A / A25A / V35A engines (RAV4, Camry, CHR, various Lexus hybrids); MTP-1014 will physically fit those platforms, but the product is positioned and validated for the G16E performance application.
