Renault Clio RS 172/182/197/200, Mégane R26 / R26.R / RS 250-275 & F4R Icons — The Coil Renault Sport Forgot to Make

The performance coil Renault Sport never sold you — F4R edition. The F4R 2.0 16v is the engine behind two decades of Renault Sport legends — Clio 172, 182, 197, 200 (F4R), Mégane R26, R26.R, RS 250, RS 265, RS 275 Trophy (F4Rt turbo) — and Renault Sport never once offered an ignition upgrade to match the chassis. The MTP-1017 is that upgrade, purpose-built for the platform: UK-engineered around Mantis' neodymium magnetic core, delivering 12% more spark energy across all 4 cylinders. Same physical coil across the F4R NA legends and the F4Rt turbo cars — plug & play, warrantied, no coding.

Signs your F4R / F4Rt 2.0 16v · K4M / K4J 1.4-1.6 · H4M 1.6 needs new coils

  • Misfire codes P0301–P0304 on OBDII
  • Cold-start stumble on high-mileage F4R (very common as coils age past 100k km)
  • Loss of top-end pull above 6,000 rpm — where the NA F4R sings
  • Rough idle after a Racingline / KTEC / R.S.Tuner map on the RS Trophy
  • Occasional CEL that clears on the next start

Installation notes

Direct plug & play — no coding, no dealer tools required. Remove the plastic engine cover (four Torx on most F4R cars), lift the coil connectors (push-tab, then pull), single 8mm bolt per coil, coils slide straight up. Replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven spark and the ECU pulls timing to compensate, especially noticeable on the high-revving F4R at the top of the powerband. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install: 15–20 minutes on a Clio RS, similar across the range.

Common questions

My R26 / RS 275 / Clio 197 doesn't misfire — why would I change the coils?

It's an upgrade, not a repair. A stronger, longer spark burns more completely — most noticeable on cold starts and at the top of the rev range where the F4R sings. Most R26 / RS Trophy owners are the second or third custodian by now, coils have seen 100k+ km, and Renault Sport never made a performance replacement. This is the upgrade RS never offered.

Does it really fit both my NA Clio 197 AND my mate's turbo Mégane RS 275?

Yes — physical inspection and shared OE part numbers confirm the F4R (NA) and F4Rt (turbo) use the same coil-on-plug pencil assembly. Same fit, same connector — one part covers Clio II RS, Clio III RS (172/182/197/200), Mégane II RS R26/R26.R, Mégane III RS 250/265/275 Trophy, plus the K4M 1.6 and H4M Dacia siblings.

Is there a proven Renault Sport performance coil already?

No. Renault Sport never offered one, and the aftermarket largely ignored these cars. MTP-1017 is the first purpose-made performance coil for the F4R / F4Rt platform. UK-engineered, 2-year warranty, plug & play — the coil the RS faithful never had.
