Hyundai i20N, i30N-Line, Kia Ceed GT & Veloster Turbo — Gamma 1.6 T-GDI Performance Ignition Coils

The Hyundai Motor Group's Gamma 1.6 T-GDI (G4FJ) is the engine behind the current best-value hot hatch on sale — the i20N (204 bhp). It also powers the i30N-Line, Kona N-Line, Kia Ceed GT, Veloster Turbo and the wider 1.6-turbo Hyundai / Kia range. It's a hard-working small-turbo four with well-documented coil weakness on cold cranks and mid-boost. MTP-1005 is a direct plug & play replacement, UK-engineered with 12% more spark energy through a redesigned neodymium primary winding. Same fit, same connector — no coding, no compromise.

Signs your Gamma 1.6 T-GDI (G4FJ / G4FD) needs new coils

  • Misfire codes P0301–P0304 on OBDII
  • Rough cold-start idle, first-thing cough
  • Loss of pull between 3,000–5,000 rpm (classic tuned-Gamma symptom)
  • Stumble on hard throttle after a Stage 1 remap
  • Occasional CEL that clears on next start

Installation notes

Direct plug & play — no coding, no dealer tools required. Remove the plastic engine cover, disconnect the coil connectors (push-tab, then pull), single 10mm bolt each coil, coils lift straight out. Replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven spark and the ECU pulls timing to compensate, killing the performance benefit on tuned cars. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install: 10–15 minutes.

Common questions

Will these fit my i20N or i30N-Line without coding?

Yes. Direct plug & play — the ECU reads MTP-1005 identically to the OE Hyundai/Kia part (27301-2M417). No coding, no GDS work required.

I've got a tuned i20N (Racingline / TFT / Fensport / Weichers) — do I need to change coils?

Highly recommended. Tuned Gamma engines see cylinder pressures well above OE spec, which accelerates coil winding degradation and is one of the most common causes of Stage 1 misfires. Fresh MTP-1005 coils give you the spark headroom to match the extra boost — most i20N tuners recommend fresh coils alongside plug changes when going Stage 1 or Stage 2.

What's the difference vs the OE Hyundai coil?

12% more spark energy from a redesigned neodymium primary winding, better heat dissipation, and UK-engineered QA. Same physical fit, same connector — a straight swap for OE 27301-2M417 with headroom for tuned use.
