Signs your 1.8 & 2.0 TFSI Pencil Coil (EA113 / EA888 Gen1-2) needs new coils
- Misfire codes P0301–P0304 on VCDS or generic OBDII
- Rough idle when cold, cough on start
- Loss of pull between 3,000-5,000 rpm (classic tuned-EA113/EA888 symptom)
- Bogging on hard throttle after a Stage 1 remap
- Fuel consumption creeping up without another cause
- Intermittent CEL that clears on next start
Installation notes
Direct plug & play — no coding, no VCDS work. Pop the plastic engine cover (Torx or pull-off depending on year), lift the coil connectors (green tab, lift and pull), single 10mm bolt each coil, coils slide straight up. Replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven spark and the ECU compensates by pulling timing, especially on tuned cars. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install: 10-15 minutes for a Golf GTI, similar across the range.

I've got a Stage 1 / Stage 2 Golf GTI (Mk5 or Mk6) — will these help?
This is exactly where MTP-1002 pays off. Tuned 2.0 TFSI engines see cylinder pressures well above OE spec, which accelerates coil winding degradation. Fresh MTP-1002 coils give you the spark headroom to match the extra boost — most APR / Revo / GIAC / Unicorn / Cobb tuners recommend fresh coils alongside plug changes when going Stage 1.
My car's OE coil is Bosch red-tip / Bosch black-tip — does MTP-1002 fit both?
Yes. Both the earlier BWA/BPY/AXX engines (Bosch red-tip) and later CCZ/CDL family (Bosch black-tip and grey-tip variants) use the same coil-on-plug pencil housing. MTP-1002 is a direct swap for all of them across the EA113 and EA888 Gen1-2 range.
Do I need to change spark plugs at the same time?
Highly recommended — plugs and coils fail together on this platform. If your plugs are due (typically 20-40k miles on a tuned car), do them at the same time. NGK BKR7EIX or NGK PFR7S8EG are the community-favourite one-step colder plug for tuned cars.
