BMW M3 F80, M4 F82, M2 Competition & 135i / 335i / 435i / M140i / M235i — N54 / N55 / S55 Inline-6 Performance Ignition Coils
Confirmed fit

BMW M3 F80, M4 F82, M2 Competition & 135i / 335i / 435i / M140i / M235i — N54 / N55 / S55 Inline-6 Performance Ignition Coils

The BMW N54, N55 and S55 inline-six family is the beating heart of the tuning world's favourite modern BMWs — the E9x and F30 335i, F22 M235i, F20/F21 M135i and M140i, F82 M4, F80 M3, F87 M2 Competition, and the M-cars' halo variants (M3 CS, M4 GTS, M4 CS). All three engines share the exact same coil-on-plug assembly (BMW OE 12138616153), and every one of them lives on boost. The MTP-1007 is a direct plug & play replacement, UK-engineered around Mantis' neodymium magnetic core, delivering 12% more spark energy across all 6 cylinders — same fit, same connector, no coding, better spark under sustained boost. Especially valuable on tuned Stage 1+ cars where OE coils are the well-documented weak link once cylinder pressures climb.

Signs your N54 · N55 · S55 3.0T inline-6 (single- and twin-turbo) needs new coils

  • Misfire codes P0301–P0306 on BimmerCode, Bimmerlink, ISTA or a generic OBDII scanner
  • Rough cold-start idle — the classic N54/N55 tell as coils age past 60k miles
  • Loss of top-end pull above 5,000 rpm, especially on tuned cars
  • Fuel trims drifting rich or lean without an intake/injector fault
  • Intermittent CEL that self-clears within a drive cycle or two
  • Stumble or timing-pull on WOT / hard-throttle acceleration — particularly common on Stage 1 / Stage 2 mapped N54 & S55

Installation notes

Direct plug & play — no BimmerCode, no ISTA, no dealer trip required. Identical fitment across every N54 / N55 / S55 variant. Pop the plastic engine cover (pull straight up on N54/N55; two 10mm nuts on S55 M-cars), unclip the 6 coil connectors, single 10mm bolt each, coils lift straight up. Always replace as a set of 6 for even spark distribution — mixed-age coils cause the DME to pull global timing to protect the weakest cylinder, negating the performance benefit. Especially important on tuned S55 M3/M4 where the ECU's knock-control system is aggressive. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install time: 20–30 minutes on N54/N55 six, 30–40 minutes on S55 M-car (tighter engine bay).

Common questions

Will this fit my M3 F80 / M4 F82 / M2 Competition / 335i / M140i without coding?

Yes. Direct plug & play replacement — the DME reads MTP-1007 identically to the OE BMW coil (12138616153 and family). No BimmerCode, no coding, no ISTA, no dealer visit required on any N54, N55 or S55 variant.

Do I really need all 6, or can I just replace one?

We strongly recommend replacing all 6 as a set. If one coil has failed, the others have seen identical heat cycles and boost hours — they're likely close behind. Mixed-age coils cause uneven spark distribution and the DME compensates by pulling timing across all cylinders, which loses the performance benefit of the new coils. If you just need to clear one specific misfire in a hurry, a single MTP-1007 will work as an interim fix — but plan to do the set.

Will this hold up on a Stage 1 / Stage 2 tuned N54 or S55?

Yes — this is exactly where MTP-1007 earns its keep. Stage 1 / Stage 2 tunes on the N54 (JB4, MHD, bootmod3) and S55 (Bootmod3, MHD Flasher) push cylinder pressures well beyond OE spec, and worn OE coils are the number-one cause of Stage 1 misfires on both platforms. The 12% spark-energy uplift and neodymium primary core give you the headroom to hold ignition cleanly under sustained boost — with the same physical fit, connector and wiring as the OEM part.
