Two decades of E46 318i and 320i, E87 and E90 1/3-series, Mini Cooper S R56 and JCW, Peugeot 208 GTi and 308 GTi, Citroën DS3 Racing, Volvo C30 — all running the same coil-on-plug design. And all of them share the same weak spot: the OE coils cook under sustained heat and start misfiring long before the plugs are due. Signs your BMW N42/N43/N46/N13 & PSA Prince 1.6 VTi / THP needs new coils
- Misfire codes P0301–P0304 on INPA, ISTA, Carly or generic OBDII
- Rough cold-start idle — the classic Prince-engine tell
- Stumble on part-throttle acceleration around 2,000-3,500 rpm
- CEL that clears then returns, especially in cold weather
- Loss of pull on the Cooper S / 208 GTi under boost
Installation notes
Direct plug & play — no coding, no INPA / ISTA work required. On the BMW N42/N46 family, pop the plastic engine cover, unclip the coil connectors, single 10mm bolt each coil, coils lift straight out. On the Mini Cooper S R56 and Peugeot / Citroën 1.6 THP, access is tighter — the coil pack sits under the plastic engine cover on the rear of the head. Always replace as a set of 4 — mixed-age coils cause uneven spark and the DME/ECU pulls timing to compensate, killing the performance benefit. Torque to 8 Nm. Total install: 20 minutes on the E46 / E90, 30 minutes on the R56.
Common questions
Will this fit my E46 318i / E90 320i / R56 Cooper S / 208 GTi without coding?
Yes. Direct plug & play replacement — the DME (BMW) or ECU (PSA) reads MTP-1007 identically to the OE coil. No coding, no INPA, no ISTA, no Diagbox work required across any of the platforms.
Do I really need all 4, or can I just replace the misfiring one?
We strongly recommend replacing all 4 as a set. If one coil has failed, the others have seen identical heat and hours — they're likely close behind. Mixed-age coils cause uneven spark, and the ECU compensates by pulling timing, which loses the performance benefit of the new coils. Especially true on the Mini Cooper S R56 and Peugeot 208 GTi where cylinder pressures are highest.
I've got a Mini Cooper S R56 / JCW — do these fit the Prince 1.6 THP (N14 / N18)?
Yes. The BMW-PSA joint-venture Prince engine (N14 / N18 on BMW nomenclature, EP6DT / EP6CDT / EP6DTS on PSA) uses the same coil design across the R56 Cooper S, R58 Coupé, R59 Roadster, R60 Countryman JCW, and the entire Peugeot 208 GTi / 308 GTi 270 / DS3 Racing range. One coil, all platforms.
